Apple releases iOS 6

Apple released the final version of its mobile operating system iOS 6 on Wednesday evening. It promises a total of more than 200 new features, including a new Maps app, a significantly enhanced Siri, Passbook for collecting and redeeming boarding passes and tickets as well as numerous improvements to details.

While iOS 6 is already pre-installed on the iPhone 5 and the new iPod touch announced last week, owners of the iPhone 3GS, 4 or 4S, the iPad 2 or 3 or the fourth generation iPod touch can upgrade to it free of charge. The installation can be done either via USB cable and iTunes 10.7 for Windows or Mac OS X or via WLAN (“Settings/General/Software update”). In this case, you should connect the device to the power supply to be on the safe side.

It is also highly recommended that you make a fresh backup of all programs, data and settings, either via iTunes (click on “Synchronize”) or iCloud (“Settings/iCloud/Backup”).

Some of the new functions are reserved for newer devices. The turn-by-turn navigation and the 3D flyover function of the new Maps app require at least an iPhone 4S, an iPad 2 or a fifth-generation iPod touch. FaceTime calls via a mobile connection require an iPhone 4S or an iPad 3, while the panorama function of the Photos app requires at least an iPhone 4S or a fifth-generation iPod touch. The Siri voice assistant has also been working on the third-generation iPad since iOS 6.

Google Maps and the YouTube app will disappear from the device with iOS 6. If you want to continue using the familiar map material instead of Apple’s new one, you can call up in the browser. However, the range of functions and convenience are then limited – Street View, for example, is missing. YouTube also works in the browser via Google already offers a successor app, but it is not yet available in the German App Store. It remains unclear if and when there will be a Google Maps app for iOS.
